چکیده

In this study, we experimentally explore the relationship between gaze direction and backchannels in face-to-face interaction. The overall motivation is to use gaze direction in a virtual agent as a mean to elicit user feedback. The relationship between gaze and backchannels was tested in an experiment in which participants were asked to provide feedback when listening to a storytelling virtual agent. When speaking, the agent shifted her gaze towards the listener at predefined positions in the dialogue. The results show that listeners are more prone to backchannel when the virtual agent’s gaze is directed towards them than when it is directed away. However, there is a high response variability for different dialogue contexts which suggests that the timing of backchannels cannot be explained by gaze direction alone.

Backchannel-inviting cues in task-oriented dialogue

We examine BACKCHANNEL-INVITING CUES — distinct prosodic, acoustic and lexical events in the speaker’s speech that tend to precede a short response produced by the interlocutor to convey continued attention— in the Columbia Games Corpus, a large corpus of task-oriented dialogues. We show that the likelihood of occurrence of a backchannel increases quadratically with the number of cues conjointl...

Dissertation Proposal Dialogue Glue: Cue Words and Prosody

This dissertation is about how semantics, pragmatics and speech prosody conspire to glue a dialogue together. This proposal focuses on the meaning and use of cue words. This set of discourse markers include backchannels like uh-huh and okay , agreements like right , and questioning particles like really . Understanding these sorts of markers is important because they indicate both when things a...

Direct and Indirect Measures of Attention Indicate a Bias Toward Cues in Methamphetamine Users

Introduction:This study aims to investigate the attentional bias toward drug-related stimuli along with subjective craving after encountering such stimuli in methamphetamine users. Studies of cue reactivity have confirmed bias in attention and gaze to drug-related stimuli for most substances, but methamphetamine drugs are less studied by a direct measure such as eye tracking. Methods:Thirty ma...

A Multimodal Analysis of Vocal and Visual Backchannels in Spontaneous Dialogs

Backchannels (BCs) are short vocal and visual listener responses that signal attention, interest, and understanding to the speaker. Previous studies have investigated BC prediction in telephone-style dialogs from prosodic cues. In contrast, we consider spontaneous face-to-face dialogs. The additional visual modality allows speaker and listener to monitor each other’s attention continuously, and...

Backchannels revisited from a multimodal perspective

In this study, we analyze the role of several linguistic cues (prosodic units, pitch contours, discourse markers, morphological categories, and gaze direction) in French turntaking face-to-face interactions. Specifically, we investigate vocal and gestural backchannel signals (BCs) produced by a recipient to show his active listening. We show that some particular pitch contours and discursive ma...
